New and Exciting Sessions for Female Adults With Learning Difficulties

Swindon Town Football in the Community launches new and exciting female football sessions for adults with learning difficulties.

Wednesday 16th June witnessed the first ever, female only, football festival at Upham Road Day Resource Centre.

The project, which is delivered under the Football League Trust Every Player Counts scheme, delivered a morning of football skills, challenges and small sided games for 10 female participants.

The players were put through their paces by STFC Community Coaches who were very impressed with the commitment and attitude displayed on the day.

Adam Greaney, Trust Disability Officer commented, "It is fantastic to see 10 players here on our first ever festival. This festival has been a huge success and has recieved great feedback from players, coaches and centre staff. Off the back of this festival we will be running weekly sessions for female players here at Upham Road. Our overall aim is to replicate the men's Swindon Leopards team and set the ladies up with their own coach, sessions and ultimately enter them into a competitive league. The ladies are already discussing their new team name, so watch out for the STFC Pink Panthers!"

The weekly sessions will run at Upham Road Day Centre, Swindon, every Wednesday 10.00-11.00am. If any players or support workers are interested in getting involved then please contact Adam Greaney on (01793) 421303 or adam@stfc-fitc.co.uk

Football Festival A Big Success

Last weekend saw football fever hit Swindon when football legend John Barnes visited the town as part of a special World Cup Themed Event.

The event organised by Swindon Borough Council in conjunction with Swindon Town Football in the Community Trust and supported by McDonald's was held at Dorcan Recreation Complex on Saturday 5th June. The festival offered youngsters to take part in coaching sessions, mini tournaments and to sharpen their skills using special inflatables.

Barnes said events such as the one in Swindon were vital to keep grass roots football alive and praised companies who supported local football teams.

"It is really important for companies to get involved in grassroots by providing kids with bibs and balls and sponsorship that they should be commeded for doing that." he said.

"Grass roots is where I come from. We never had these kind of opportunities when i was young."

John spent the last few hours speaking to youngsters and their parents about his time as a player and later as a coach.

Throughout the day Girls Under 10's tournament, Over 35's veterans, Mini Soccer, Cohesion Cup and Street Soccer and finally a Swindon Leopards Disability Exhibition match taking place.

On show also for people to see was the Community Shield, known as the Charity Shield.

A big thank you must go to Traks Solutions who sponsored the Girls Tournament, Fit 4 Less for sponsoring the Disability Match and Bliss Hair Salon who sponsored Mini Soccer, One-o-One for sponsoring the Cohesion Cup and The Swindon Hydrotherapy sponsoring the Swindon Leopards Disability Game.
